Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative Awards Grants to 30 Rare Disease Patient Groups
The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) announced a set of grants aimed at tackling rare diseases. The 30 recipients will each receive $450,000 over 2 years through the Rare as One funding program. In addition, each recipient organization will be paired with patient group mentors and scientific advisers.
“We realize that’s only 30 groups out of 7,000 diseases,” said Tania Simoncelli, CZI’s head of science policy at Rare as One in an interview with STAT. “But if we can actually work with these groups to figure out the model, figure out what’s generalizable — then anyone can do this.”
CZI was created in 2016 with a budget of $3 billion over a decade dedicated to curing, preventing, and managing all diseases.
